Personal Profile

Rick Whiteley joined Raychem in 1980 in a Research and Development role. In November 1999 he became a consultant to offer his skills to a wider market place where the issues of fire hazards and polymers were becoming ever more important.

The consultancy offers a technical approach and provides in-depth experience of:

• Chemical and polymer synthesis

• Thermoplastic materials formulation and processing

• Flame retardant and fire technology

• The development of low fire hazard materials, particularly for wire & cable insulation materials.

Capabilities of the consultancy are in the specific areas of:

• Provision of expert advice, analysis and guidance in the development of polymer formulations to meet defined specifications.

• Preparation of scientific and technical literature for internal and external publications.

• Review and critique of draft specifications, patents and technical literature.

• Preparation of reports for clients concerning regulatory issues and standards development through close involvement with the BPF, BSI and IEC. Rick Whiteley is the the convenor of IEC/TC89/WG11 which is concerned with the fire hazards of electrotechnical equipment - heat release, flame spread, smoke, corrosivity and toxicity.

• Provision of expertise in test methods and the interpretation of data, including cone calorimeter techniques and measurements.

• Training of scientists, customers, sales and marketing specialists in the areas of polymer technology, flame retardants, standards and test methods.

• Working with, and providing access to, a wide range of industrial and academic contacts
