Personal Profile

I formed Quality By Choice Ltd in 2008 after a 30 year career with a MARS company as a Packaging Development Manager and for a period of time a Process Development Manager. I specialised in plastics in food packaging, their conversion and product assembly, primarily for the food and drinks industry. Prior to that I worked for the Ministry of Defence in the Scientific Branch.

The packaging I developed incorporated most of the plastic groups and processing technologies including extrusion, lamination, injection moulding and blow moulding. I have significant experience in design and development for high volume high quality manufacture as well as for small engineering plastic parts.

Quality is not a bolt on extra or an additional option but should be appropriately defined, measured, assessed and assured. For any product to succeed Quality needs to be built in at every stage from concept through development to implementation and scale-up including supplier selection and development.

Where defects and non-conformities occur they have definite causes and it is in identifying what they are and applying appropriate preventative measures that unnecessary costs can be avoided. It is also through efficient and controlled manufacture that profits can be maximised and customer losses through compromised quality minimised.

Throughout my career I have been fortunate to collaborate with and make use of the services from Research Associations and Universities to access specialised analytical and Development techniques and I can offer this as a service to you for where problems demand it. As a member of a network of skilled professionals spanning many disciplines I can help find the right specialist where I can’t help you directly.

 Projects delivered include;

  • Technical development of a product from a Greenfield thermoforming manufacturing site to achieve 50% cost reduction pa ongoing and at <5ppm defects, >500MM pa.

  • Development of and sourcing Injection mouldings incorporating product development, injection mould tool sourcing (96 cavity stack moulds), moulder selection and development resulting in 30% cost reduction, <5ppm defects, >95% uptime, 200MM pa tool output with silent hours unattended running, completed within the US and Europe.

  • Collaboration with customers and suppliers within the US, Europe and Japan to develop, assess and implement drinks products and equipment.
